Dental Examination and Cleaning

Dental Examination

Your initial visit to our office is mainly to get to know more about you and your mouth!  During this time, we will be collecting and recording information in regards to your medical background, periodontal health, and present restorations.  Once this is completed, we will review our findings and recommend the necessary course of treatment.  We respect the fact that what you chose to do with this information is solely your decision!

  • Examination of diagnostic radiographs: Essential for detection of decay, tumors, cysts, bone loss, also helps to determine tooth and root positions.
  • Oral cancer screening: examination of the face, neck, lips, tongue, throat, tissues, and gums for any signs of oral cancer.
  • Periodontal disease evaluation: determining the condition of the gums and bone around the teeth in regards to infection and bone loss that may be present.
  • Tooth decay detection: Every surface of every tooth is checked thoroughly not only for decay, but also leakage and breakdown within any restorations that are present (fillings, crowns, etc.).

Professional Cleaning

Professional dental cleanings  are  performed by Registered Dental Hygenist.  Your cleaning appointment will include an examination and the following:

  • Removal of calculus (tartar): Calculus is hardened plaque that has been left on the tooth for some time and is now firmly attached to the tooth surface.  Calculus forms above and below the gum line and can only be removed with special dental instruments.
  • Removal of plaque: Plaque is a sticky, almost invisible film that forms on the teeth.  It is a growing colony of living bacteria, food debris, and saliva.  The bacteria produce toxins (poisons) that inflame the gums.  This inflammation is the start of periodontal disease!
  • Tooth polishing: Removal of stain and plaque that  has not otherwise been removed during homecare.
