A crown is a covering that encases the entire tooth surface restoring it to its original shape and size, helping to stengthen the remaining tooth structure.
Although there are several types of crowns, porcelain (tooth colored crown) is most commonly recommended, because they resemble your natural teeth. They are highly durable and will last many years, but like most dental restorations, they may eventually need to be replaced. Porcelain crowns are made to match the shape, size, and color or your teeth giving you a natural, long-lasting beautiful smile.
Reasons for crowns:
What does getting a crown involve?
The procedure for a crown requires two appointments. Your first appointment includes taking two impressions, one to be used a as temporary while your long term crown is being processed at the lab, and the second is sent to the lab to make your crown. You will leave the office with your temporary crown, and this will remain on your tooth acting as a cover to keep you comfortable for approximately two weeks until your new crown is returned from the lab.
While you are frozen, we will prepare the tooth by removing all decay, using the HEALOZONE, and placing a new foundation in order to build the crown to. Once these details are accomplished, your temporary crown will be placed, and shading and colours will be confirmed before you leave. On the rare occasion though, we will ask you to visit the local lab for confirmation of colour choices.
At your second appointment your temporary crown will be removed, the tooth will be cleaned, and your new crown will be carefully bonded into place. It is very important that your bite is perfect, therefore we may check this numerous times before we send you off! Dr. Milne or Dr. Manicom may even request that you return a couple days after to ensure you are comfortable.
You will be given care instructions and encouraged to have regular dental visits, which will also allows us to follow up on your treatment at that time.
