Radiographs

Dental radiographs are an essential, preventative, diagnostic tool that provide valuable information not visible during a regular dental examination.  Dentists and  hygienists use this information to safely and accurately detect hidden abnormalities in order to complete an accurate recommendation.  Without the assistance or radiographs, problem areas may go undetected.

Dental Radiographs help to diagnose:

  • Bone loss
  • Cancerous tissue
  • Decay
  • Developmental abnormalities
  • Improper root development
  • Need of root canal therapy, presence of infection

Detecting and treating  problems at an early stage will save you time, money, unnecessary discomfort, and your teeth!

Are dental radiographs safe?

We are all exposed to natural radiation in our environment.  The amount of radiation exposure from a full mouth series of x-rays is equal to the amount a person receives in a single day from natural sources.

For optimal health and care, we now have the benefits of DIGITAL radiography. This allows us to get a precise look at areas of concern, with significantly reduced radiation. Digital radiographs are just another way that we can offer our patients the best that todays dentistry has to offer!

How often should dental x-rays be taken?

The need for dental radiographs depends on each patient’s individual needs.  Your dentist and hygienist will recommend necessary radiographs based on the review of your medical and dental history, dental exam, signs and symptoms,  and risk for disease.

A full mouth series of dental radiographs may be recommended for patients who are being treated for advanced periodontal disease.  Bitewing, or cavity detecting xrays are recommended at your recall visits, usually every 18 months to 2 year intervals.  A periapical xray is performed when a tooth becomes problematic, and a closer view of the tooth and root is required.  A panorex  film is a full view of the entire dentition, sinus, jaw joint and all surrounding bone structures.  As you can see, every radiograph has an individual need and purpose, therefore the Doctor takes great discretion upon each recommendation.
