Helpful Cleaning Tips for Your Invisalign Trays
Invisalign trays offer a revolutionary method of teeth straightening for many people, especially older teenagers and adults, who are not comfortable using traditional metal braces. The clear, plastic aligners will straighten your teeth discreetly without anyone noticing! Invisalign treatment is available at Dr. Karen Davis and Dr. John Milne Dentistry in Sarnia.
It is important to take good care of your Invisalign trays and make sure they are properly cleaned. Here are 5 cleaning tips that will help your Invisalign treatment remain as simple as possible.
Clean your aligners every time you clean your teeth
A good rule of thumb for how often you should clean your Invisalign trays is to do so every time you clean your teeth, either before or after you brush and floss in the morning and evening. This prevents any bacteria and food particles that may have been on your aligners from transferring to your teeth when you put them back.
Brush them gently with a soft toothbrush
Properly cleaning your Invisalign trays is simple and straight forward. All you require for the job is a soft-bristled toothbrush and non-abrasive toothpaste.
Using a small amount of toothpaste, simply brush your aligner trays gently and thoroughly inside and out, making sure to remove any food particles. Be careful not to brush too hard, as you may scratch them. Once you are finished, you can rinse your trays under cool water and allow them to dry. If you have any pets please be aware that the saliva attracts them, sometimes becoming a chew toy! We recommend you store them in a safe place!
Always rinse your aligners after removing them
If you have to take your aligners out for any reason during the day, such as when you eat, then it is highly recommended that you rinse them. A simple rinse can go a long way towards preventing bad smells, which can occur when plaque and saliva are allowed to dry and encourage bacterial growth.
A few “DON’TS” that will help keep your trays a better shape!
On top of keeping in mind the how to properly care for your trays, you need to remember a few simple cleaning “don’ts” as well:
- Do not use any abrasive cleaners, such as bleach or denture cleaners.
- Do not soak your trays in mouthwash.
- Do not use anything but a soft-bristled toothbrush for cleaning.
- Do not eat or drink beverages other than water with your trays in.
