What is BOTOX® and How Does It Work?
Botulinum toxin, better known as BOTOX®, is produced by the Clostridium botulinum bacteria. Over the years, scientists have discovered a way to safely administer small doses of this toxin to the benefit of patients. Known for the treatment of wrinkles and facial creases, BOTOX® has now been approved to treat other conditions, including chronic migraines and bruxism. Small, diluted amounts of the substance are injected into specific muscles and the signal from the nerve to the muscle is blocked. The result is a controlled relaxation of the muscle. It’s important to note that results are temporary and may vary per patient. Injections may be recommended once every 12 weeks or less frequently depending on your unique situation.
The injection is done with a fine needle and takes only a matter of minutes. You may experience discomfort similar to a bug bite or pin prick. There is no downtime and you can resume your normal routine immediately, although it is recommended to avoid strenuous activities for 24 hours.
Treating Bruxism, TMJ Pain & Migraines with BOTOX®
Bruxism is a common condition identified as excessive teeth grinding or jaw clenching. When left untreated, this condition may damage your teeth and cause TMJ pain, headaches, and other problems. Night guards and mouth guards have long been used to protect the teeth, and while this option may be right for you, BOTOX® may be suggested as an alternative or supplemental treatment. BOTOX® can help address the underlying issues and relax the over-active muscles that are causing you to clench or grind.
If you have chronic migraines, BOTOX® is approved to treat people suffering 15 or more headaches per month with each headache lasting 4 hours or more. While not intended to be a cure, this therapy may provide relief by reducing the number of headaches you endure per month.
